
There was a man sitting nearby who jumped up to offer us a tour. He didn't speak much English but he knew how to say "tannery" and "pigeon shit" and "ammonia" whilst pointing at the pits, which was enough for us to understand the process.
He gave us a piece of henna-stained camel bone as a souvenir and then dropped us off at the local carpet shop.
