Mac Nuts
This is a bucket of macadamia nuts at Purdy's All Natural Mac Nut Farm on Moloka`i. What? Don't recognize them? These macadamia nuts are still in the hard shell. Each delicious nut is encased in one of nature's most difficult to crack shells. The smooth brown shell is a nearly perfect sphere and smashing it open with a regular nut cracker is next to impossible. I remember trying to open these things in kindergarten with a hammer. More than the nuts, I remember whacking my thumb and the round nut skittering away as if nothing had happened.
At Purdy's farm, the folks have devised a clever nut holder. It's essentially a thick leather loop with the loop just big enough for the macadamia nut to fit suggly inside. With the nut in the holder, whacking the shell open with a hammer is much easier. No more throbbing thumb this time around ;).
