`Alae Run
I'm not sure what this little guy was running from or to. Maybe it had heard someone mention dinner ;).

Although related to the American Moorhen, these little guys are a unique species all their own. Sadly, largely because of introduced predators and loss of habitat they are currently endangered. http://www.honoluluzoo.org/gallinule.htm If you check the link in the top post you can get the full story but essentially legend says this little bird is said to be the animal that brought fire to the Hawaiian people. Its red face is the result of the `Alae being punished by the demi-god Maui for stealing the fire and giving it to the people. Maui burned the `Alae's face in the hot coals he had stolen and forevermore the `Alae has had the red forehead and beak. |
