We had a chance to visit with Dr. West a few months back and take him around Ford Island. Sitting outside the Dispensary where he was assigned, he related facts about his experiences during the attack.
He responded to Pearl Harbor when he saw and heard the bombs. At Hospital Point (where the Battleship Nevada had beached itself), he flagged down a launch and convinced the operator to take him over to Ford Island. They too came under fire from planes strafing the Nevada and had to jump from the launch, swimming through the fuel oil from the damaged fleet he still made it to the dispensary and immediately began to attend to the wounded being brought in.
