Chuck Sanderson, executive director of Manitoba's Emergency Measures Organization, told CBC News that he expects Winnipeg will be spared when the Red River reaches its crest there on Wednesday. "The crest that's supposed to be coming through is about a foot-and-a-half lower than the crest we had a week ago, so there's every indication that Winnipeg will weather it completely fine, " said Sanderson. Although the threat of flooding has mostly abated in the area, several highways and roads still have sections closed due to water or dikes over the road. |

The entire area between Fargo N.D and Winnipeg has a large floodplain along the river. The worst flood was in 1997, which destroyed a large portion of Grand Forks, ND and flooded enormous areas in both ND and Manitoba. Currently, the flood was about the same as in 1996 which was recorded as the 3rd worst since records were kept. |
