31 July 2007

I'm at my wits end. 'Kat hates his pills and hates me. He's abandoned all his favourite places to try to hide from me. He looks unhappy the moment I get him. I didn't get a photo on the 30th because he was just miserable. This one was taken a moment before he started glaring.

I was "hiding" his (twice-a-day) pill in a bit of chicken but he's wise to that. At first he would shred any morsel that I gave him to look for the pill. Now he just won't accept food from me. At all. And he shreds morsels from anyone else.

So back to the not-very-pleasant force his mouth open, toss the pill to the back of his throat and then hold his mouth closed. Today, not even that worked. I'm not sure HOW he is managing to spit it out from the back of his throat, but he is. He screeches and hisses and even gets the claws out and we just can NOT get his mouth closed before he spits the pill out again.

I'm calling the vet to ask about other alternatives. I feel a total incompetent. And on top of that, my cat hates me.

:(

I have a couple of suggestions.

1. As kat likes to lie in amongst the washing, why not try ironing him a few times. Uuslly works for me!

2. What are the tablets for. You might be able to get a liquid to place on the skin which is much easier.

he won't hate you forever .. I had the same difficulty with my cat - ejecting the pill with the back of her tongue out the side of the mouth .. hope he gets better soon - he still loves ya (he hasn't left home has he!) .. :)

They are antibiotics, his tummy is still bad and he still has the runs. It tastes horrid!

Waiting on a call-back from the vet regarding other options although the assistant clearly feels I should just hold the cat down and keep trying.

peanut butter...i think cats can have it.. they can't spit it back out. On the farm we always used peanut butter.

That's a VERY good idea! The vet has actually come up with an alternative treatment which I'll start tomorrow. But next time (eeeek) I'm trying the peanut butter.

can you crunch up the pill in some food?

We used it with our dogs and other animals. I think it works cause they are more interested in the peanutbutter that you managed to get on their tongue...they get all crazy distracted about the sticky goo ...and down it goes...an ADDED benifit is ..they are hillarious to watch as they try to ungoo their mouth *LOL*

Its' odd when the vet puts a pill down the throat it looks amazingly simple. I also have a cat who hates it, and I always feel really bad and cruel...I've tried everything too. crushing them up in food he just leaves it all...

Good luck anyway.

(think I may try the Peanut butter trick..tried everything else)
