It is the same family of plants (malvacea) but our local hibiscus are Hibiscus chinensis and the well known hibiscus tea variety from Mexico, South America and Jamaica is Hibiscus sabdariffa - Do not know if we have it here in Hawaii. The H. sabdariffa flowers look more like what we call hao. The Chinese used parts of the H. chinensis flowers for medicinal purposes (herbal remedy). |
