Meet The New Neighbor

A Cooper's Hawk showed up on my porch rail today! It's been fascinating watching different types of birds showing up now that winter is setting in. My big bird book shows a map of North America along with each bird, color-coded to indicate where they hang out at different times of the year. I'm accustomed to seeing red-tailed hawks in this area, so it was neat to see a different kind. Unfortunately, it seems this lovely creature has spied the proliferation of smaller birds that hang out on or under my back porch. S/he even hopped down into the bushes to forage around for the ground-nesting species. Yikes!

On a funny note, I watched a squirrel chase away the crows that were intruding on its 'private' section of the porch rail. Ha! The size difference is so disparate, it makes the squirrel's audaciousness even more comical.

That sure sounds like a wonderful book that you have, and this is such a beautiful bird, which you captured so nicely too! The bird's of prey sure fascinate me... but yes... YIKES for all of their little "prey"... :( Enjoyed your notes here too by the way! ;)

The book I have is different than any other bird book I've seen. i bought it in 1991, as a homeschool resource for my kids. The illustrations are gorgeous! I just found out it's still available and has a new cover and publication date, so it's been updated -- cool! If you'd like to check it out, here's the URL: http://www.rdstore.com/product_detail.cfm?pid=346&seo=Book_of_North_American_Birds

You're welcome! One note: It's not a little field guide; it's definitely a coffee table book :-)
